WHY WE EXIST2018-12-21T18:08:49+00:00

20% of Costa Ricans live in poverty and extreme poverty conditions.

427,000 children and adolescents in the country are affected by poverty which makes this population at high risk for the following social problems:

  • Negligence (left alone at home or abandoned completely)

  • Teenage pregnancy

  • Removed from school to work for the family

  • Gangs, violence, and criminal activity

  • Seduced into selling drugs to help provide money for their family

  • Physical, sexual or emotional abuse

  • Prostitution & human trafficking

  • Lack of education

15% of births in Costa Rica are from moms between the ages of 15-19 years old . Girls continue to be at a disadvantage in these communities, and many have been victims of sexual abuse, forcing them into unplanned pregnancies with no support from their abuser or family.
